How do humor and politics intersect? What role does satire play in the social and political life of  a democracy? Can humor have an impact on society? If so, to what extent? In this course we will explore aspects of American Culture as expressed through humor and satire  beginning in the late 18th century to the present day. We will review the works of humorists such as Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Will Rogers, to contemporary comedians/commentators such as Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, and Samantha Bee. In the process students will develop a broader understanding of English including idiomatic expressions, hone their reading and writing skills, and hopefully gain an appreciation for the role of humor in social discourse.
